I See You Mara
In this episode, I explore the Buddhist concept of Mara, not as a literal demon, but as a metaphor for the unskillful aspects of our own minds and the forces that hinder our progress toward liberation. Drawing from the story of the Buddha's encounter with Mara, I highlight the pivotal phrase, "I see you, Mara," emphasizing that directly confronting and understanding our fears, anger, and delusions, rather than running from them, is what diminishes their power. This approach, illustrated by childhood memories and examples like dealing with sharks or bears, teaches us that true acceptance isn't resignation but a clear-eyed recognition of reality, allowing us to respond skillfully without hatred. By turning towards what we fear and seeking to understand its roots, we can transform our relationship with difficult emotions and circumstances, leading to personal growth and a more skillful way of navigating life's challenges.
