The Cup Is Already Broken: A Buddhist Approach to Gratitude
In this episode, I explore gratitude not as a commandment, but as a natural byproduct of recognizing interdependence and impermanence. I discuss how the Buddhist concept of dependent origination, illustrated by the metaphor of Indra's Net, reveals that all phenomena are interconnected, leading to an inevitable sense of appreciation for the countless efforts that sustain our lives. Furthermore, I delve into the teaching of impermanence, using the Zen story "The Cup Is Already Broken" to highlight how accepting the transient nature of all things allows us to cherish the present moment and the people in our lives more deeply. Practical applications include mindful reflection on the causes and conditions that enable our existence, such as through nikyo practice, and embracing the fleeting nature of relationships and experiences to foster a more profound and natural sense of gratitude.
