Right Intention
In this episode, I explore the concept of right intention, the second component of wisdom on the Eightfold Path, which works alongside right view like two wings of a bird. I explain that intention is the crucial difference between merely reacting to life and skillfully responding to it, using a personal example of balancing work and family needs to illustrate how a brief pause to consider our intention can change our actions and their impact. Key takeaways include understanding intention as the "seed" of karma, where our underlying motivations shape outcomes, and recognizing that the practice is in planting and tending to these seeds, not controlling the harvest. I also delve into three aspects of right intention: renunciation (letting go of attachments that cause suffering), goodwill (wishing well for ourselves and others, even when it's difficult), and harmlessness (being mindful of the ripple effects of our words and actions). Practically, this involves scheduling intentional pauses to check our motivations, identifying when unskillful intentions like greed, aversion, or ignorance are at play, and focusing on the process and system of our intentions rather than solely on achieving specific outcomes.
