Sitting With Sadness
In this episode, I explore the concept of "sitting with sadness" and clarify that Buddhist teachings on acceptance are not about passive resignation but about developing skillful action. I share a personal experience with my son, where he expressed sadness about missing our old house, and instead of dismissing his feelings, I sat with him, shared my own memories and emotions, and demonstrated that it's okay to feel sad and to explore those feelings. This experience highlights that mindfulness isn't about tolerating suffering but about gaining clarity on reality to respond more effectively, whether it's addressing personal emotions or difficult external situations like an abusive relationship. The key takeaway is that by pausing and observing our reactions, we can move from reactivity to skillful action, transforming potentially difficult moments into opportunities for deeper connection and understanding.
